Expert Thoracic Surgery at Animal Trust
Affordable, Life-Saving Care for Pets
At Animal Trust, we provide specialist thoracic (chest) surgery at our 24/7 hospitals, ensuring pets with serious conditions receive expert care at a fair price.
Thoracic surgery involves operating on the chest cavity, often by accessing the area between the ribs or through the ribcage. This type of surgery is used to treat severe and life-threatening conditions.
Common Thoracic Procedures We Perform
Lung Lobectomy
This involves removal of part of the lung and may be required due to trauma, torsion or cancers. The lung tissue is stapled or sutured back together and tested for any leaks before closing the chest cavity.
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)
A Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a congenital heart condition in pets where there is an abnormal blood vessel (the ductus arteriosus) that fails to close after birth. Normally, this vessel closes shortly after birth to separate blood flow between the heart and lungs. In a pet with PDA, the vessel remains open, causing abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery. This can put excessive strain on the heart and lungs and may lead to serious health complications if not treated.
If left untreated, PDA can lead to heart failure, high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension), and other life-threatening conditions. Surgical closure of the PDA, by tying off the abnormal blood vessel, is the most effective treatment and helps restore normal blood flow, improving your pet’s heart function and overall health.
Pyothorax (Severe Chest Infection)
Pyothorax is a condition in which infected material or pus accumulates in the pleural cavity, the space between the lungs and the chest wall. This condition usually occurs as a result of an infection, typically caused by bacteria, that leads to inflammation and fluid buildup in the pleural space. The infection can spread from nearby structures such as the lungs, or it may be caused by trauma, surgery, or a foreign object. If the infection is severe or doesn’t resolve with drainage, surgery may be needed to remove infected tissue or address any underlying cause.
What to Expect After Surgery
Thoracic surgeries are serious and invasive, sometimes requiring hospitalisation for several days afterwards in order to allow proper monitoring and pain relief. Usually a chest drain is placed to drain away fluid or air that accumulates in the chest cavity. This may remain in place for several days. The surgical wound will normally take 10-14 days to heal and needs protecting by wearing a Buster collar or a body suit.
