Sid has soft tissue surgery at Animal Trust Shrewsbury
Sid came to Animal Trust Shrewsbury as a referral from his own vet due to a large swelling under his jaw. Despite treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, the swelling did not get any smaller. A sample was taken and sent to a lab, where it was diagnosed as a sialocele.
Sialoceles are formed from an accumulation of saliva under the skin, normally due to damage to the salivary gland or duct. This damage causes saliva to leak into the surrounding tissues, leading to inflammation and swelling. The best treatment for sialoceles is to remove the affected gland. Sid was referred to our soft tissue surgeon, Becky, for this procedure. The sialocele involved his submandibular salivary gland, so Becky made an incision under his jaw and carefully dissected the gland along with the associated sublingual duct and glands, ensuring that nearby blood vessels and nerves were not damaged.
Since the surgery, Sid has made a remarkable recovery. His owner reports that Sid is now eating much better and is back to his normal, happy self. We wish Sid all the best in his continued recovery!
