BOAS surgery for Luna the Pug
Luna came to Animal Trust Shrewsbury because she had frequent infections in the skin folds around her nose, despite her owner's diligent cleaning routine. Additionally, her owner noticed that Luna was experiencing increased difficulty breathing during exercise and was becoming out of breath more easily. Vet Becky admitted Luna for a skin fold removal procedure and an assessment for Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) surgery.
Prior to the surgery, Luna underwent chest X-rays to rule out any other potential causes of her breathing difficulties. Once vet Becky confirmed that everything was normal, she proceeded with the surgery and removed the excess fold of skin over Luna’s nose, this should generally help prevent future sores and infections.
Next, we assessed Luna's throat and nose for BOAS surgery. We found that her soft palate was longer than it should be and her nostrils were smaller than normal. Vet Becky performed a staphylectomy to shorten Luna's soft palate and a rhinoplasty to widen her nostrils.
Luna has been recovering well, she has stopped snoring and finds it much easier to breathe now that she has larger nostrils and more room in the back of her mouth. Vet Becky is very pleased with her progress and we all wish Luna continued good health!
