What is Hypothyroidism in Dogs

Hypothyroidism in dogs is a condition caused by insufficient production of thyroid hormone due to underactive thyroid glands. The most common cause is the pet's own immune system attacking the thyroid gland or the replacement of thyroid tissue with fatty tissue. Other potential causes include cancer or a defect from birth.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism in Dogs

Weight gain without eating more than normal; tiredness and lack of desire to exercise; getting cold easily and low temperature; dry, dull hair with dandruff; very thin to near bald coat; skin and ear infections; slow heart rate (occasionally); thickening of the skin around the face and sad face expression.

When to contact your vet

Contact your vet if you think your dog may have symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Diagnosis of Hypothyroidism in Dogs

Diagnosis is based on symptoms and a blood test to check thyroid hormone levels, which will be low in dogs with hypothyroidism. Your vet may also recommend general blood screening tests and skin tests, especially if they have skin-related issues.

Treatment of Hypothyroidism in Dogs

Hypothyroidism is treatable but not curable by giving per-mouth medication (synthetic thyroid hormones) in tablets or liquid form for the life of the pet.

Prevention of Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is not preventable, but early diagnosis and treatment reduces risk of complications.

Outlook

If a patient responds well to the treatment, they can live a long life free of symptoms. Pets may need regular blood tests to confirm the dosage of the medicine being used.
